Implementing AI: Advice for Engineering Leaders

Every day, I chat with engineering leaders thinking about diving into AI, and I notice two distinct groups emerging: those fully embracing AI and those waiting cautiously on the sidelines. If you’re serious about AI, my straightforward advice is to set aside four to six weeks, grab a small team of developers, and just start prototyping.

I’ve consistently seen that teams who invest this upfront time get incredible results—sometimes even doubling their development velocity. The key is structured prompts. By breaking down your project into clear prompts—from high-level business goals to specific, actionable tasks—you create consistency and clarity in your codebases.

Also, don’t overlook your existing systems. Setting up clear rule repositories for your legacy code makes it easy for AI to adopt and stick to your established standards. This not only reduces technical debt but ensures your AI-driven approach remains effective and scalable.
